Enzymes Improve Ecf Bleaching of Pulp

چکیده
The delignification efficiency of different laccase enzymes was examined on the eucalyptus Kraft pulp. The laccase enzyme from Trametes versicolor showing the highest delignification efficiency was selected and used in the elemental chlorine-free bleaching sequence for improving the pulp bleachability. An appreciable reduction in chlorine dioxide consumption was also obtained. Further reduction in chlorine dioxide consumption was obtained when the same laccase treated pulp was subjected to an acid treatment after the extraction stage followed by the DEPD sequence. Elemental-chlorine free bleaching was also performed using the xylanase-laccase treated pulp. Xylanase treatment was incorporated to the laccase mediator system in the elemental-chlorine free bleaching both sequentially and simultaneously. The bleaching sequence DEPD followed and in both the cases, the reduction in chlorine dioxide consumption was greater in comparison to the control. The chlorine dioxide consumption was reduced further when xylanaselaccase treated pulp was given an additional acid treatment. The final pulp properties of the treated pulps were comparable to the control pulp.

The Impact of Kappa Number Composition on Eucalyptus Kraft Pulp Bleachability
Consumption of chemicals during ECF bleaching of kraft pulp correlates reasonably well with kappa number, which measures with KMnO4 the total amount of oxidizable material in the pulp. However, the method does not distinguish between the oxidizable material in residual lignin and other structures susceptible to oxidation, such as hexenuronic acids (HexAs), extractives and carbonyl groups in the...
متن کاملStructural Modifications of Residual Lignins from Sisal and Flax Pulps during Soda-AQ Pulping and TCF/ECF Bleaching
We have studied the structural modifications of lignins from sisal and flax during their soda-anthraquinone (AQ) pulping and subsequent totally chlorine-free (TCF) and elementary chlorine-free (ECF) bleaching. For this purpose, residual lignins were isolated from pulps, analyzed by Py-GC/MS, 2D-NMR, and GPC, and their characteristics were compared to the “milled-wood” lignin of the raw material...
متن کاملAbsorbable Organic Halide (AOX) Reduction in Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF) Bleaching of Bagasse Pulp from the Addition of Sodium Sulphide
A laboratory investigation was developed to confirm and to quantify the reductions in absorbable organic halide (AOX) discharge when sodium sulphide was added during elemental chlorine-free (ECF) bleaching of sugarcane bagasse pulp. After the chlorine dioxide bleaching stage, the pulp was sent directly into the extraction stage without washing. FTIR was employed to determine the breakage of che...
متن کاملEffluent Loads From Different ECF Bleaching Sequences Used In Hardwood Kraft Pulp Bleaching
Effluent loads from different traditional and emerging ECF bleaching sequences were investigated. Oxygen delignified Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Acacia mangium kraft pulps having similar kappa number, ca 12.0 were used in this study. Different ECF bleaching sequences were compared with reference sequence, D0EopD1 in terms of effluent load, such as AOX, COD and TOC. Depending on the nature of s...
متن کاملECF BLEACHING WITH A FINAL HYDROGEN PEROXIDE STAGE: IMPACT ON THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF Eucalyptus globulus KRAFT PULPS
Two industrial elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching sequences, D0(EOP)D1(EP)D2 and OQ(PO)DP, are compared with respect to the bulk content of lignin, carboxyl, hexeneuronic acids (HexA), and reducing groups after each bleaching stage. HexA groups contribute significantly to the total content of carboxyl groups, and their degradation during chlorine dioxide bleaching is reflected by a decreas...
